那是我的底线!我是不会干这样的事儿!
The principal was furious.
She was ready to fire me.
【BEEP】一六年的时候,我刚来件牛逼的事儿。
在我当时的国际学校跟小张吵了一架,死那以后,学校的所有的领导对我这个老外的态度简直是一个180度大装扮。
So there was a rule in our school.
Every teacher had to do an open class in front of the school's administration and parents.
And this was a big event, almost like a huge performance, that everyone would start preparing a month in advance.
So imagine, the school's principal, all managers and teachers, about 20 people, plus about 20 parents.
And everyone is there to see how good of a teacher you are.
This is an ugly, orchestrated event that has nothing to do with real teaching, but that's exactly what was expected of me.
And just so you get an idea of how bad things were, listen to this.
Every student had to give a specific answer to a specific question that needed to be rehearsed at least three to five times.
Can you imagine that?
Now every little detail counts, no room for mistake.
Otherwise, you're fired.
Can you imagine the amount of pressure I felt before my first time?
Well, guess what?
The next day after the meeting where I was told to start preparing my open class,I go directly to the principal's office and tell her,I'm not doing it this way.
It's a school and we're not only teaching our students the school subject, but also we're showing them the types of behavior that they will display in the future.
What do we expect them to learn from this lesson?
How to fake learning?
How to make fools of their parents?
How to be good actors?
It's a performance, not a lesson.
And I'm not doing it.
Oh, you won't believe what happened after.
The principal was furious.
She was ready to fire me, disobedient rookie who decided to challenge the order, her order.
It was absolutely unheard of.
Later that day, I spoke with the manager of international staffand she managed to convince me to do that open lesson following the rules.
And I said yes.
So finally, the day comes.
Students and I enter the classroom.
The principal, all managers and parents are already there.
And everyone seems to be a little nervous and a little excited, anticipating something.
And that something was my open class.
But oh boy, did they not expect to see that.
The class was a success.
Of course, it was fun.
Students loved it.
Parents were happy to see their kids learning and enjoying the process.
But when I looked at the principal,I saw that her face was the color of the darkest night.
And that's because I did it my way.
Yes, I did it with my students' best interests in mind.
I did it because I believe that a school is a place where students learn how to be decent human beings.
I did it because it was the right thing to do.
Honestly, I thought I'd be fired the next day, but it didn't happen.
After all, the class was a success and there was no reason for it.
Oh, and the principal.
She just ignored me.
And would occasionally say hello, but only when it was necessary.
And so I believe that as a teacher, I am the one who bears the responsibility to show my students a good example, teach them how to be real, not superficial.
Life is about being yourself with all your strengths and weaknesses.
And school is the place where it all begins.
Because everything we do, we do it for our students.
What do you think?
Now, do you think I should have done that lesson the same way as it was expected of me?
Or do you think I did the right thing?
Let me know in the comments what you think about it and let's find a solution.
Because situations like these are extremely common.
So we need to stop that.
